Benin art

Year 6 have started a Learning Quest unit where they are discovering the history, geography and art of this great west African country, Benin.

Over the last couple of weeks they have  looked at Benin Bronzes, the use of animals in Benin art and what people thought about Benin art work. Metal workers in Benin made beautiful plaques, masks and statues for the Oba. These are often called ‘Benin Bronzes’, however most are actually made of brass rather than bronze. Artwork from Benin reveals a lot about the kingdom’s people and their beliefs.
